10代目の城主となった阿麻和利は、海外貿易を勧め、力を付けていきます。
このことを警戒した琉球王国の尚泰久王は、重臣である護佐丸を中城城に住まわせ牽制したほか、娘の百度踏揚（ももとふみあがり）を嫁がせ阿麻和利との関係を深めようとしますが、1458年、阿麻和利は、護佐丸を倒し、琉球王府打倒へと動き出します。
しかし、その事を百度踏揚とその付き人であった大城賢雄（おおぐすくけんゆう）に知られ、琉球王府軍によって滅ぼされてしまいました。
琉球の歴史書では、琉球王府に刃向かった悪者のイメージが強い阿麻和利ですが、その後の研究では、海外貿易に長け。勝連に繁栄をもたらした上に、名将であったと称えられていたとされています。
そんな阿麻和利が、最後の城主となった勝連城は、標高60mから100ｍの岡の尾上にあり、南城（へーぐしく）、中間の内、北城（にしぐしく）で構成されています。特に北城は、階段状に連なった3段の曲輪からなり、最上段の1の曲輪からは、海中道路やその先の平安座・宮城・伊計・浜比嘉島を望めるほか、遠く中城城を望むことができます。
